NEW THIS YEAR!
THE SECRET SCROLL (Grades K-6)
This lively story is based on a well-known Chinese folktale.  The Emperor travels across China searching for a secret that will bring peace and harmony to his palace.  He finally finds his answer in the home of a simple man, Tsao Wang, who understands the power of kindness.  This play is performed by two actors with audience participation.

Audience: 300 student maximum for each 50-minute performance.

ONE GOLD COIN (Grades K-6)

This warm, funny and uplifting play is based on a folktale from Central America. A healer comes to a poor village wearing a mysterious gold coin around her neck. She announces that the coin must be given to someone who truly needs it. The coin passes through the hands of a series of endearing characters transforming their lives and their hearts. This heartwarming tale about the importance of giving is performed by two actors with audience participation.

Audience: 300 student maximum for each 50-minute performance.

MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR PERFORMANCE...
ADD A POST-PERFORMANCE DISCUSSION!
Enhance your students' theatrical experience with a
post-performance discussion. Following a performance of One Gold Coin or The Secret Scroll, students discuss the play with the actors. The actors pose questions to the students and the students get a chance to ask questions too. The actors also demonstrate what happens "behind the scenes" of the production. They turn the set around and show the students the split-second costume and character changes this production requires. An entertaining and educational arts experience! Maximum 125 students per post performance discussion.

ADD A FOLLOW-UP CLASSROOM WORKSHOP!
The fun and learning continues with a follow-up classroom workshop. After a performance of One Gold Coin or The Secret Scroll, students participate in an engaging creative drama workshop with an actor from the play. Students explore the characters and themes of the play, and work together to compose and act out their own original scene extending the story of the play. This exciting workshop connects with curriculum content standards in English/Language Arts and Theatre. Maximum 25-27 students (one class) per workshop.

STORIES ON STAGE! (Grades PreK-12)
A Multi-Cultural Program Celebrating Stories From Around The World!

This dynamic program combines storytelling, drama, and song to explore world cultures. Our gifted performer becomes a variety of characters while bringing a story to life. Students "get into the act" too by participating in this riveting experience.

STORIES ON STAGE is performed by one actor with audience participation.

Choose any our extraordinary performances:

A Journey Through Latin America(Grades K-6) Puerto Rican-born actress and storyteller MARIAN LICHA weaves stories and song together as she takes students on a magical journey through Latin America. The stories are rich with humor and folk traditions. Included in the program are several stories of the foolish and delightful Juan Bobo.

Master Storyteller DIANE MACKLIN offers a variety of programs that combine African and/or African American stories with tales from other traditions. Each program is carefully woven together to explore a theme that can be found in every folk tradition. Programs include:

Big Lessons from Little Things (Grades PreK-K) Even the smallest creatures can teach us all some important lessons.

Asking for Trouble (Grades PreK-2) includes Native American tales and a traditional American tale to explore the important lesson of when it is good to leave well enough alone.

Sense and Nonsense
(Grades PreK-2) includes delightful stories that turn things upside down so that what appears to make sense can be nonsense and what appears ridiculous can actually be quite sensible.

Forest Tales (Grades 3-6) combines a Native American tale with an African-American story. Both stories highlight the consequences of selfishness and greed.

Tricksters and Fools (Grades 3-5) In these amusing tales, the trickster gets his due and the fool teaches valuable lessons.

Telling the Truth (Grades 6-12) These powerful and age-appropriate stories highlight the importance of honesty.

FREEDOM BOUND (Grades 4-8)
The richness of African American history, traditions, and folklore are woven together by acclaimed storyteller Diane Macklin.  Tales of narrow escapes on the Underground Railroad and the lore of the “people who could fly” will enchant audiences and honor the strength and determination of Americans with African roots.
